10 Ways to Prepare for Summer Break Now

Prepare for Summer Break in advanceHere in Michigan we have a bit of a heatwave and that is a good reminder that even in February we can make our summers less hectic by preparing in advance.

10 Ways to Prepare for Summer Break Now

Summer break will be here before you know it. With that in mind it is a good idea to consider doing a few of the items below so that you can have a more organized and fun summer.

  1. Schedule at least two mini camps or summer camps. Yes, they can be pricey but by preparing now, you won’t have the expense when you’re also going back to school shopping. By choosing new camps they can learn a new skill or refine something they already know how to do. Choosing one of each will expand their horizons. Consider ninja or Gymnastics camp!
  2. Schedule a mini get away. St Ignace and other parts of the UP can be fun!
  3. Make a summer reading list. For you AND the kids.
  4. Learn to swim. Now. Before summer. Don’t let your kids feel left out because they can’t go to pool parties! It is good for socialization and it is a real life skill! Goldfish Swim Schools, where my kids go and where I am a partner, has year round classes and easy enrollment.
  5. Get ready to go camping. Michigan has a great network of both public state parks and private recreational areas. If you need to get your kids (or you!) Over the idea of being too rugged, consider a cabin to ease your family into the idea of “roughing it”
  6. Learn CPR. As a parent a refresher can’t hurt you. And, with play dates and trips, it can be life saving.
  7. Plan an old fashioned play date where kids from many ages come over and play kick ball or kick the can. The tangent? No phones allowed. Not even yours 🙂
  8. Start sorting those summer clothes. The earlier you start this arduous task, the better for all involved.
  9. Research shows that kids learn when they’re bored. They get creative. So even with all of these ideas, don’t over schedule.
  10. Add in those special days of fun with special adults and parents. Those one one one times can help you have a re-set on any issues and help get close.
